2025 Spirit of the Community Award Winner: Gary Engel
On Tuesday, May 6, Pick Ellijay hosted the inaugural Trailblazer Summit-our first annual meeting celebrating a year of growth, innovation, and dedication in Gilmer County’s tourism industry. This special event highlighted the achievements of the hospitality community and honored outstanding individuals who are shaping the future of tourism in our region. Four awards were presented: the Rising Star Award, Spirit of the Community Award, Frontline Service Award, and the Creative Expression Award.
The Spirit of the Community Award honors an individual whose vision, leadership, and long-standing dedication have made a true and lasting impact on Gilmer County. It’s a recognition of someone who builds something meaningful-and then turns around and shares it with the people around them.
This year’s recipient, Gary Engel, is a veteran, a visionary, and a servant leader in every sense of the word. Nearly 15 years ago, he made Gilmer County his home. Since then, he’s helped shape it into a place people want to visit-and a place locals are proud to call home.
As the founder of Engelheim Vineyards, Gary didn’t just build a business-he built opportunity. He’s created jobs, fostered partnerships, and brought a sense of pride to the local wine industry. Through collaboration with neighboring wineries, he’s helped create a regional experience that draws visitors and supports local growth. With the addition of an event center, his farm has become a true community gathering place-hosting fundraisers, celebrations, and more.
Before starting Engelheim, Gary served nearly 30 years in the United States Army, retiring as a Colonel. And while his military service may have ended, his service to others hasn’t. He’s continued to lead-on local boards, in statewide wine organizations, and within his faith community. Gary Engel is an entrepreneur, a patriot, and someone whose heart is fully invested in the future of Gilmer County.
