The site of a Cherokee nation village for many years, Historic downtown Ellijay was later a Saturday go-to-town marketplace where neighbors met to trade goods and news. It was the center of many mountain trades and crafts from woodworking to chenille tufting to quilting and whiskey distilling. Today, Historic downtown Ellijay is thriving with shops, restaurants, entertainment and places to relax and enjoy the cool clean mountain air. Historic downtown Ellijay includes the Tabor House Historical Society Museum and Civil War Library, the home of self-taught artist R. T. Henson and several other historic buildings. Four distinct and moderate seasons allow Historic downtown Ellijay visitors to enjoy celebrations all year long. The St. Patrick’s Day celebration in March, the Taste of Ellijay in May, 4th of July celebration and parade in midsummer and the annual Christmas Parade and Light Up Ellijay festivities in late November. You can also enjoy Apple Arts and the Georgia Apple Festival Parade in Historic downtown Ellijay in October.
