Ellijay Orchard Guide: Red Apple Barn
Since 1927, Red Apple Barn has been a family tradition in Ellijay, passed down through generations of the Pritchett family. What started as a working farm has grown into one of Ellijay’s most beloved fall destinations. Today, visitors can enjoy U-pick apples, classic yard games like cornhole and horseshoes, tire swings, and photo-worthy spots all around the property, including a charming covered bridge tucked near the creek. It’s the kind of place where fall memories are easy to make, whether you’re visiting with kids, friends, or just looking to soak in the season.
The Story Behind Red Apple Barn
It all began in the late 1920s, when W.T. Pritchett started farming the land. In 1965, his son Marvin planted the first apple trees, never imagining that decades later, families from all over would be returning each fall to make memories in that same orchard. Just six years later, the iconic red barn was built to store and sell apples, becoming a landmark for generations of visitors.
While the original orchard has since been converted to pastureland for a small herd of cattle, the heart of the farm remains the same. Today, W.T.’s grandson Barry and his wife Becca continue the tradition with the same warmth and care that started it all. Whether you’ve been visiting for years or are planning your very first trip with friends and family, Red Apple Barn’s peaceful mountain views and welcoming atmosphere have a way of turning one visit into a yearly tradition.
The U-Pick Experience
After checking in at the U-Pick Shed and grabbing your sticker, you’ll hop on a tractor for a scenic 10-minute ride out to the orchard. You’re welcome to purchase extra apples while you’re there, but your admission includes one to pick, along with a cup of cider and a warm apple cider doughnut waiting for you when you return.
Red Apple Barn’s U-pick season begins Saturday, August 23, from 10 AM to 5 PM. Admission is $11.95 and includes the tractor ride, one apple from the orchard, a visit to the pumpkin patch, and plenty of fall fun around the farm.
