Ellijay Orchard Guide: Hillcrest Orchards
Whether you’re coming with the kids, family, or friends, a visit to Hillcrest Orchards feels like stepping into a fall movie. But what sets Hillcrest apart isn’t just the apples, it’s the experience. With homemade cider doughnuts, crisp slushies, swimming pig races, cow milking, wagon rides, a petting farm, and more nonstop fall fun, Hillcrest Orchards is a must on your fall bucket list.
The Heart Behind Hillcrest
Hillcrest Orchards has been a beloved part of Ellijay’s apple country since 1946, when Hayward Reece returned home from World War II and, together with his wife Ellen, planted their first 15-acre orchard. What began as a family farm has flourished into a fourth-generation fall destination that still embraces its humble roots.
Today, Hayward and Ellen’s daughter Janice, along with her daughter Kristin (and grandson Jackson), run the orchard, continuing the same family spirit that launched it all. Over the decades, Hillcrest has grown into an “adventure farm,” offering U‑Pick apples, carnival games, homemade baked goods, and so much more.

Apple Pickin’ Jubilee
This year, Hillcrest’s apple picking season kicks off the weekend of August 30th and runs every Saturday and Sunday through October (or until all apples have been picked). During this time, the orchard transforms into the Apple Pickin’ Jubilee, a full-on fall festival with U-Pick apples, wagon rides, and their famous swimming pig races (happening daily at 12:30 PM).
After paying admission and purchasing your apple picking bag, head into the orchard to pick your own apples. Explore the rest of the farm by visiting the petting zoo, playing mini golf, or bouncing on the jumping pillows. Plus, enjoy fair-style favorites like turkey legs, lemonade, and more at the food stands throughout the farm. Don’t forget to stop by the bakery, where you can watch them make fresh cider doughnuts, pies, and fritters which are especially delicious with a scoop of ice cream. September is prime time for apple picking, so plan your visit early to enjoy the best of Hillcrest’s 79th harvest!
