Business Spotlight June - Albert's Boiled Peanuts
Albert O’Shields began selling boiled peanuts a little over 10 years ago. Retiring early at the age of 52, after working in the corporate sector, he wanted something else to occupy his time. Upon encouragement from his family he started “Albert’s Boiled Peanuts”. Albert has four different flavors of peanuts – regular, dill, bacon and spicy. Albert contributes his perfect peanuts to the consistency of cooking time and the same amount of salt added. It takes over 28 hours to cook a batch of peanuts. Albert and his wife Cindy have been a part of the Apple Festival and Apple Arts Festival for many years. He estimates cooking over ½ ton of peanuts on both weekends of these two festivals. During the busy fall season, he has seven people helping him and his wife Cindy, two of which come all the way from Colorado to assist! Albert is a past Chamber Member of the Year and is an active member in the Gilmer Chamber.
You can always find Albert at festivals as far south as Canton, north to Blue Ridge and can usually be found at Mercier’s Orchards.
