On October 18, 2016, North Georgia Community Action held a Ribbon Cutting and Open House for their Senior Life Services Center in Gilmer County. They also hosted a health fair for the community with many vendors that provided helpful, senior related information.
North Georgia Community Action became members of the Gilmer Chamber in February. They have served Northwest Georgia since 1974, through a variety of community service programs. North Georgia Community Action, aims to improve the quality of life for the low-income, elderly and home-bound populations. They serve Pickens, Murray, Whitfield, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cherokee, Dade, Fannin, Gilmer and Walker counties.
To meet the goals of serving Gilmer County’s senior citizens they offer a variety of services at the Gilmer County Senior Life Services Center. This is a place with a distinctive atmosphere in the services and programs they offer. They provide a wide variety of activities geared to the interests of Gilmer County’s seniors. Each month they have health information classes, exercise sessions, games, music, field trips, bingo, parties, as well as provide a daily meal service to member seniors.
They also provide services for those much less active seniors who are confined on a limited or permanent basis to their homes. “Meals on Wheels” provides assistance for persons 60 and over who are home-bound and cannot come to the Senior Center. Research indicates that these services help to keep our seniors independent and living in their own homes for a longer period of time and helps prevent premature placement into nursing homes.
However, their goal is to provide more than just a meal. They believe they make a difference in the lives of those they serve because their staff and volunteers make a special effort to check on the well-being of each of their seniors they visit. A meal delivered with a smile and a few encouraging words can mean a lot to someone whose health is keeping them from being able to get out.
“Meals on Wheels” also provides regular education and health information to our seniors through special literature distribution. And, by regular reassessments of each senior’s level of need, they are able to give them valuable contact information and referrals to other needed services in the community.
Another important program offered through North Georgia Community Action and the Gilmer County Senior Life Services Center is the Energy Assistance Program for Homebound and Elderly households. This program begins November 1st. Homebound and elderly that all members of the household are aged 65 years or older, unless they have a child in the home under the age of 18 or a member of the household that is confined to the home because of medial reasons, are able to apply for this Energy Assistance Program. To make an appointment contact 706-635-5858.
North Georgia Community Action also provides the MATS (Mountain Area Transportation Service) services in Gilmer County. This transportation service operates on a non-fixed route basis and their vehicles can accommodate service for individuals with disabilities. The transit service is used by many for medical appointments, shopping trips or as an alternative source of transportation for local citizens when needs may arise.
