Downtown Shopping in Gilmer County

“Pick” Ellijay and Gilmer County as your family vacation or a weekend getaway destination and you’re likely to get a taste of at least one of the many varieties of fresh, crisp apples that are grown here. This 432-square-mile, forest-covered county in North Georgia’s Blue Ridge Mountains is Georgia’s Apple Capital, which provides our nation with more than 600,000 bushels of apples each year. You can’t go wrong with any variety of apple you pick.

Mountain Biking
More than 100 miles of single-track mountain biking trails have earned Gilmer County the official designation as Georgia’s “Mountain Biking Capital.” And there is no off season for mountain biking here. Our trail systems are maintained year-round by a large group of volunteers from the Ellijay Mountain Bike Association. Ask the folks at the Cartecay Bike Shop to point you toward the	Carter’s Lake Trails, a lung-busting, 5.6-mile, roller coaster of a ride that winds through the Ridgeway Recreation Area. For a longer ride, pick up a trail map for the 12-mile ride at Stanley Gap or a slightly technical single-track ride at Bear Creek.
