10 Things You Must Do in Ellijay Before Summer is Over

1. Enjoy a delicious Ice Cream Cone from Crossroads Grocery

2. Hike to the top of Amicalola Falls

Amicalola Falls is the tallest cascading waterfall in the Southeast. We challenge you to tackle the trail of staircases with 600 steps to the top and take in the breathtaking views along the way. You can cheat and drive to the top, but where is the fun in that.

3. Swim at Jack’s River Falls

If you can take the steps at Amicalola Falls, then you must hike out to Jack’s River Falls in the Cohutta Wilderness Area. Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine named Jack’s River Falls one of the Best Swimming Holes to Jump Into This Summer.  A few miles of hiking and you can enjoy the falls and a refreshing pool. If you are feeling daring, jump off the high point of the falls, which looms 20 feet high.

Directions: To reach the falls proceed north out of Chatsworth, Ga. on Hwy. US411 for 13 miles to Cisco. Turn right on OldGa2 Rd. Continue on this road (pavement ends about 1.8 miles) 10 miles to FS 62 on the right at Big Frog Loop Road sign. Turn right on FS62 and continue 4.4 miles to Jacks River Trailhead. The Forest Service fee parking area is on the left. The trail to the falls is 3.5 miles of moderately easy walking on an old railroad bed. After reaching the river follow it downstream 0.5 miles to the falls.

6. Stroll Down the Boardwalk in Downtown Ellijay

Completed just in time for Summer, stroll down the boardwalk in Downtown Ellijay visiting all the shops and try the newest restaurant Seth’s on Boardwalk serving up delicious pizza.

7. Tubing the Rivers (That’s right! You can tube more than one!)

Ellijay’s name is derived from Indian word(s) meaning “many waters” and you can experience our many rivers! Tube or kayak the Ellijay River, Cartecay River or the Coosawattee River. All three offer a combination of relaxation and fun!

8. Taste Delicious Georgia Peaches

9. Spend the Day at the Beach … on Carter’s Lake

Can’t make it to the ocean this summer, that’s okay. Carter’s Lake offers a great beach at Harris Branch for families to enjoy without the sharks. Harris Branch also offers camping and a pavilion to enjoy a picnic.

10. Go to the Gilmer County Fair

Every August at the Lions Club Fairgrounds you can visit the Gilmer County Fair. The Gilmer County Fair offers entertainment for the whole family including ​rides, live entertainment, and an exhibition featuring: Quilts, Agriculture, Crafts, Food, Canning, Baking, Sewing, Needlework, Art, Flowers, Photography, and more.
