This 432-square-mile, forest-covered county in North Georgia’s Blue Ridge Mountains is Georgia’s Apple Capital, which provides our nation with more than 600,000 bushels of apples each year. The array of outdoor activities in Gilmer County is impressive to say the least. With some of the finest fishing, most breathtaking waterfalls, 11 mountain trails for hiking, 59 trails for biking and 15 for horseback riding, whitewater rapids and so much more, Gilmer County is a nature lover’s paradise. Within a short distance of Ellijay are the State recreation areas of Carters Lake (12 miles),	Amicalola Falls State Park (20 miles), and Fort Mountain State Park (20 miles). Two extraordinary wildlife management areas, the Cohutta Wilderness and the Rich Mountain Wilderness, as well as National Forest recreation areas provide delight for outdoor enthusiasts. For those who love the challenge of “the links”, a public golf course welcomes residents and visitors.
